About Munich

Layout of the city

Like many other cities, Munich began as a small city surrounded by a wall and then expanded. The "city center" occupies like a small area that is close by and easy to visit, and you will get a feel for the original wall, yes, still the gates.

The Isar flows through the city and it is usually a very green place. The enormous English garden, is a park with a lake with boats and in the beer garden (of course) and is worth a visit.

Geography and weather

Munich is the largest city in the south of Germany and is about an hour and a half drive from the Alps. Most of the time, the mountains are just a dark unclear shadow on the horizon, but with the right weather conditions - in particular, a special wind called Föhn -, they become crystal clear and beautiful. This is when the postcard pictures taken. Munich is very close to Austria, Switzerland and after a short leap through Austria, also Italy.

It is a place mostly flat and has real continental weather so very warm in summer and very cold in winter. The summer looks quite a few thunderstorms in the evening hours, but a lot of beautiful sunsets. If you come in winter, bring really warm clothes, in the summer the nights are mild, but bring a small umbrella just in case.

Under an hour drive away in the south (with train connections to course) are the lakes, which is where many Muncheners head during the summer months. These are glacier lakes and thus deep and cold until far into the summer, but there are also smaller ones which warm up faster.
